Basic Camera Shots, Angles and Movement

CAMERA SHOT

ELS- Extreme Long Shot.
this can be taken - horizontal shot , an idefinity shot , establishing shot
and gives the viewer a sense of scale.

LS - Long shot.
This is taken to show a whole figure/object
shows things in relation to their surroundings
can also as well be an establishing shot

MLS - Medium Long Shot.
Shows more details of the charater even though you can still see all of thier bodys
retains the setting quite clearly in the mise-en-scene

MS - Medium Shot.
is roughly from the knees or waist to the head
there is a fine line between MLS and MS

MCU - Medium Close Up.
taken from the mid-chest to the top of the head
shows alot of detail of the charater
and can be used in Shot/Reverse Shot

CU - Close up
this shot shows detail of the face
this is useful to portray emotions of the charaters
shows head and shoulders

ECU - Extreme Close Up
this show shows a small part of the face
can also show extreme fear or emotions if focused on the eyes

CAMERA MOVEMENT

Crab
camera moves completely to the left of right , following someone also called " TRACKING SIDEWAYS".

Tracking shot/dolly shot-
this shot is created by placing a camera on a dolly and pushed along the track this is the maintain the smoothness of the shot

Panning- Camera pivots left and right , but says in a fix point on a axis.

Boom - camera moves up or down ( as though its a lift)

CAMERA ANGLES

Birds eye angle
is an angle that looks directly down , the angle is mostly used as an establishing angle and an extreme long shot

Zoom
camera zooms in/out from subject
the lense moves , not the camera

High angle
this angle is used to look down on something . this makes the charater look weak and vulnerable. the angle usualy is used to give the audience a perspective of a certain charater.

Eyelevel angle
this view is used so the viewer is on the same level as the charaters on screen , it is the most common angle used in most films

Low angle
is the opposite of "High angle" so this shot is looking up on a character making him feel strong and all powerfull, it can make the audience feel vulnerable cause the charater is looking down on them. this can make the audience feel sorry for charaters who engage this one.

Dutch angle
is used to demonstrate the confusion of the charater, this is used for example if a charater has been hurt.
